Very funny, and even usefull
Datum:10.12.2009 - Rating: 4/5As a foreigner who recently moved to Germany, this very funny little book offers explanations to some of the stange phenomena you come across here.
The Xenophobe's Guide to the Germans. (Xenophobe's Guides)
Hilarious & brilliant summary of what makes up the German identity
Datum:06.08.2009 - Rating: 5/5Some quotes :
Overdoing it is a German habit, and not only where food is concerned.
Germans are cursed with being able to penetrate deeper into the meaning of events than anyone else.
All Germans love to point out to you what you are doing wrong or what you are failing to do right.
At work, ambition and competitiveness are the expected norm and their outward signs are intensity of effort.
A polite 'how are you?' is likely to be answered with a comprehensive head-to-toe survey.
German readers are happiest when they know that every penny spent on a book has bought them an hour's worth of hard, self-improving labour.
It is not recommended that you come to German literature looking for a happy ending. You won't find one.
Germans want value from their culture and art, and value means bulk.
Germans polish their shoes frequently and with diligence. But that's only half the story.
No self-respecting German has confidence in anyone but an expert.
If you like your sex to be a mysterious smouldering ecstasy, choose the French. To the Germans it is more like an invigorating work-out.
The accidental and unplanned is something no German likes or feels comfortable with.
In business, never deviate from the formal. The Germans will remain on `Sie' terms with colleagues even after decades of sharing an office.
You must shake hands on meeting, on parting, on arriving, on leaving, on agreeing something and on agreeing to disagree.
With their unshakeable conviction that there is a right answer to everything, they have difficulty with shades of opinion.
Conclusion: Easy read, covers topics from national identity, culture, beliefs & values, manners, customs etc. Simply brilliant analysis of the German character, sometimes exaggerated, however, at the end of the day worth the money paid (as outlined above ;-)
Enjoy!
Deutsche Bahn on time?
Datum:28.05.2009 - Rating: 4/5I agree with the other reviewers - overall to the point, often hilarious and overflowing with irony and sarcasm. As a German reading this book you'll need a robust stomach, the stuff is sometimes hard to digest. Yet in general a LOL, at times ROTFL book, a must read.
But - Deutsche Bahn trains always on time? This is ridiculous. I wished this was even approximating the depressing reality. Must have been 20 years since this was true. So please, take this as a sarcasm, too!
And the public health system may still be better than in other european countries - but try to get an appointment with a specialist if you are a "Kassenpatient" (insured through the public health system) and not a "Privatpatient" (privately insured). The undertaker might see you sooner than the doctor. I had to wait 2/12 months recently.
And the german knack and love for order and regulations - generally true, but don't expect or fear too much. Go to the big cities, Berlin f.e., and you'll see that you have to interprete regulation and order in certain areas of town in a very wide sense.
But all this said - a wonderful little book, go get it!
